What is alkaline water, and is it good for you?
A plain-English guide to pH, what makes water alkaline, and what an ionizer actually does to your tap water.

pH in one minute
pH is a scale from 0 to 14 that tells you how acidic or alkaline a liquid is. Pure water sits at 7, which is neutral. Anything above 7 is alkaline, anything below is acidic. Most tap water in India sits between 6.5 and 7.5. RO water is often slightly acidic because the minerals have been removed.
What makes water alkaline
Water becomes alkaline when it carries alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. A water ionizer does not add chemicals. It uses electrolysis across platinum-titanium plates to separate the minerals already in your water, sending the alkaline minerals to one outlet and the acidic part to another.
What alkaline ionized water gives you
- A higher pH, typically 8.5 to 9.5 for drinking
- A negative ORP (oxidation reduction potential), which means antioxidant potential
- Dissolved molecular hydrogen
- Smooth taste with smaller water clusters
What it does not do
Alkaline water is not a medicine and does not cure disease. It supports good hydration and a balanced diet. If you have a medical condition, speak to your doctor before changing what you drink.
Why calibration matters in India
Water quality changes from one locality to the next. The same ionizer setting can give pH 9.5 in one home and 8.2 in another. That is why AlkaFresh ionizers are calibrated to your home's water at installation, so the level you select is the level you get.
