Hydrogen water machine: what it is and how to choose one in India
Hydrogen water, ORP and ionizers explained. Why a good alkaline water ionizer is also a hydrogen water machine, and what numbers to look for.
What a hydrogen water machine does
A hydrogen water machine dissolves molecular hydrogen into drinking water. Hydrogen is what gives the water a negative ORP, its antioxidant potential. There are two ways to make it: a small electrode in a bottle, or a full water ionizer that produces hydrogen as part of electrolysis.
Ionizer or bottle?
- Hydrogen bottles are portable and cheap, but hold 300 to 500 ml, take several minutes per fill, and do not change pH or give acidic water.
- Water ionizers make hydrogen-rich alkaline water on tap, at the flow of your kitchen, and also give purified and acidic water. For a family, an ionizer is the practical choice.
The two numbers to check
- Dissolved hydrogen, in PPB. The IonX 1101 is designed for up to 1600 PPB.
- ORP, in millivolts. Negative is good. The IonX 1101 reaches -750 mV depending on source water and level.

Drink it fresh
Hydrogen leaves an open glass within an hour or two. Drink straight from the machine, or fill a closed bottle to the top.
