TDS explained: why it decides how your water ionizer performs
Total dissolved solids changes from street to street in India. Here is what the number means and how it affects alkaline water.

What TDS means
TDS stands for total dissolved solids, measured in ppm (parts per million) or mg/L. It is a rough count of the minerals and salts dissolved in your water. Borewell water in Haryana can be 800 to 2000 ppm. Municipal supply is often 150 to 400 ppm. RO water is usually 30 to 80 ppm.
Why it matters for an ionizer
An ionizer works by passing current through water. The minerals in the water carry that current. Too few minerals (very low TDS) and the ionizer struggles to reach a high pH. Too many minerals (very high TDS, hard water) and the plates scale up quickly, and the pH can swing.
The ideal range
For a domestic ionizer, feed water between 80 and 300 ppm works best. If your RO gives 40 ppm, we may suggest a mineral cartridge. If your borewell gives 1200 ppm, we recommend installing the ionizer after an RO.
What AlkaFresh does about it
- Our engineer measures your TDS and hardness at the site visit.
- We recommend the right pre-treatment, if any.
- The ionizer is calibrated so that each alkaline level gives a known pH for your water.
- Auto pH control keeps the output steady even when TDS drifts through the season.
If you know your TDS, tell us on WhatsApp and we will suggest the right setup.
