ORP and hydrogen water: the two numbers behind antioxidant water
Negative ORP and dissolved hydrogen are what separate ionized water from simply alkaline water. Here is what they mean.

ORP: oxidation reduction potential
ORP is measured in millivolts (mV). Tap water usually measures +200 to +400 mV, which means it is oxidising. Ionized alkaline water measures negative, often -300 to -750 mV, which means it has antioxidant potential: it can donate electrons rather than take them.
Hydrogen: the active ingredient
During electrolysis, hydrogen gas forms at the negative plates and dissolves into the alkaline water. It is measured in PPB (parts per billion). The IonX 1101 is designed for up to 1600 PPB. Hydrogen is what gives ionized water its negative ORP.
Why both numbers drop over time
Dissolved hydrogen escapes from an open glass within an hour or two. For the best effect, drink ionized water fresh from the machine, and store it in a closed bottle filled to the top if you must carry it.
How to read the numbers honestly
- Displayed and app values are estimates. A calibrated meter is needed for a verified reading.
- Output depends on your source water, flow and the level selected.
- Higher is not always better for drinking. Start at level 1 or 2 and move up over two weeks.
